FX Help (Current or Ex-Far East Hammers)
|
Gents, I want to move some Singapore Dollars (currently in a SGD bank account) from Singapore to the UK (preferably into a UK Bank acct).
It's a decent amount of money and the FX being offered by the banks in question is (in my opinion) daylight robbery, especially given i use Thomas Exchange for holiday money and used to getting close to spot on most major currency transactions, albeit not in this kind of size.
Does anybody have experience of bringing money back into the UK, and what would you recommend please?
All help appreciated, as always.

I live in France and quite often change up £10- £20k and sometimes more. I opened accounts with HIFX but they got expensive so moved to Currencies Direct. It usually costs about 1 or 1.2 cents off the live Euro rate.
Google them but you will need to supply genuine bank details and evidence of who you are in line with money laundering rules but once established, you just call agree a rate and transfer them the money in whatever currency and on receipt of funds, they transfer the changed money into your account.
At first I used to worry about who and where my money had disappeared to but after nearly 10 years of doing a deal before lunch means I have the Euros the following day. Weekends and bank hols excepted.

Club - I'm assuming you mean transfer your funds out in SGD (to avoid FX) to another SGD account in Sing and then have them transfer the funds to the UK with hopefully a better rate?
If so, maybe Google money exchangers, etc in Sing, and look for a credible well known company.

Transferwise is good but doesn't show as supporting Sing to UK. You can send them a request to see if they can help.

I'm sure Trevor B will be along shortly with his wisdom :-)
We all get fucked over by the banks, you will probably just have to suck it up.

Sorry Private, for clarity, a third party organisation that people have used to bring money (SGD or other) back into the UK as GBP.
I'm not looking to do anything dodgy, i just cant believe that's the only option available given how competitive and sophisticated the FX market is these days

Private, i suppose i'm asking if anyone is aware of a tried and trusted method of currency exchange and transfer that isnt in my opinion, the bank arse raping you, then proceeding to pat you on the arse and blow you a kiss!

Thinking about it, I'll actually be in Singapore in September - shall I take my largest suitcase?

If you can't be there to withdraw the cash and then make other arrangements I really don't see what other choice you have.
What type of help are you looking for exactly?

Are you travelling from Singapore to the UK at any point? You can take it out and bring it with you so long as you declare it (if it's over the declaration amount of course). Operating under the assumption it is your money too
